BOOKBINDING WORKSHOPS
LONG STITCH BINDING
The long stitch book was commonly used by accountants and record keepers in 16th century Italy. Learn how to construct a modern variation with eight signatures, and rows of sewing on the spine that are both structural and decorative. (3hrs)
DRUM LEAF BINDING
This binding uses adhesive to connect the pages rather than sewing. Invented by book artist Timothy Ely, the binding opens flat, making it ideal for artist books, sketchbooks, journals, and prints. (5hrs with lunch break)
ONE SHEET BOOKS
You don't need thread and glue to make a book! In this workshop, we'll make books with just a single sheet of paper and some cutting and folding -- learn several quick and easy ways to put a book together with just a few tools. (3hrs)
ZINE WORKSHOPS
BASIC & CREATIVE ZINE STRUCTURES
Zines are DIY, self-published booklets for sharing ideas and art. In this structure-focused workshop, we'll go through basic and more creative ways to fold and assemble zines - from the popular one sheet booklet, to map folds, to flexagons. INTRO TO ZINES
This introductory workshop covers single sheet and sewn pamphlet zine structures while giving time for creativity through collage, drawing, and writing. We'll also look at the history and types of zines, resources, and fairs. (3hrs)
CREATIVE / ALTERNATIVE ZINE STRUCTURES
Get creative with alternative structures and materials for self-publishing! Experiment with both content and bindings through found materials and found poetry. Learn how to make map folds, flexagons, and their variations, then explore unique ways to fill them. (3hrs)
